Professor Vanessa McDonald is a member of the NEW1000 Executive Board.
She currently leads two Centres of Research Excellence (CRE), the NHMRC CRE in Asthma Treatable Traits (CREATT) and the CRE in Severe Asthma.
In addition, she is the Co-Director of the Hunter Medical Research Institute Viruses, Infections/Immunity, Vaccines and Asthma (VIVA) Research Program, and a lead researcher for the University of Newcastle's Priority Research Centre for Healthy Lungs.
Professor McDonald specialises in personalised medicine research for lung health and has pioneered an approach known as the "treatable traits" model of care. This care aims to deliver the most appropriate treatment to individuals, limiting exposure to ineffective treatments and unwanted side-effects.
Professor McDonald is a Fellow of the Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand and has been awarded the Asian Pacific Society of Respirology Professor Ann Woolcock Research Award, and the University of Newcastle Vice Chancellor's Award for Research Excellence and Researcher of the Year Award.
